Myanmar visa policy

The Myanmar visa policy states who can enter and freely travel within the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, also known as Burma.

Currently, no foreign citizens can cross the Myanmar borders without a visa. Depending on nationality, it is necessary to apply for a Myanmar eVisa or a regular visa.

The Myanmar eVisa system was launched to make the application process easier – now, it is possible for more than 100 nationalities to apply for a visa to Myanmar within several minutes from any place. There are two types available: Myanmar tourist eVisa and business eVisa.

Those not eligible for an electronic visa to Myanmar must apply for a regular visa at the nearest Myanmar embassy or consulate.

The visa policy of Myanmar is significant to examine before your travel. Note that besides a valid Myanmar visa, foreigners must also meet other entry requirements of Myanmar: everyone needs to prepare additional obligatory documents to be allowed into the country.

Who can enter Myanmar?

Any foreign national who wishes to enter Myanmar can do it, as Myanmar enforces no admission refusals based solely on nationality.

Still, foreign travelers, regardless of nationality, must satisfy all the entry requirements of Myanmar. It includes having a valid passport and visa, as well as following COVID-19-related restrictions. According to the Myanmar visa policy, it is required to obtain a Myanmar eVisa or a regular visa.

Entry requirements for Myanmar

All foreigners willing to visit Myanmar must have a passport that remains effective for at least 6 months (180 days) from arrival and a proper Myanmar visa.

Since not all COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, passengers still have to show proof of full vaccination with a vaccine recognized by the Ministry of Health that was completed at least 14 days before entry in Myanmar.

Alternatively, it is allowed to show a PCR test with a negative result taken within 48 hours before arrival.

Also, all foreign citizens must complete the Myanmar health declaration form before coming to Myanmar. The implementation of the health declaration is aimed at minimizing the spread of COVID-19.

If visitors are arriving from certain countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission, they additionally require proof of yellow fever vaccination.

It is mandatory to declare currency in excess of USD 10,000 upon arrival in Myanmar.

Methods of getting a visa to Myanmar

All foreign citizens who plan to enter Burma must obtain a Myanmar visa. According to the application method, it is possible to get an electronic visa or a regular visa.

Electronic visa

An electronic visa (eVisa) to Myanmar is a travel visa that can be obtained through an entirely online application process.

There are two online visa types to Myanmar: a Myanmar tourist visa and a business visa. Both types enable their holders to enter Myanmar once.

A tourist visa to Myanmar permits a 28-day stay, while a business visa allows a visit for up to 70 days.

To apply for a Myanmar eVisa, it is enough to complete a short online form and cover fees. The approval will be sent to the applicant’s email address.

Regular visa

Persons not eligible for an online visa to Myanmar must get a regular visa. It can be obtained at a Myanmar embassy or consulate.

It is required to gather the proper documentation, schedule an appointment at the nearest office, and have the visa interview with a consular officer.

Entry requirements for children

Most entry requirements of Myanmar implemented for adults also apply to underage travelers. However, there are still some slight differences.

Children under 12 years old do not have to present a COVID-19 vaccination certificate or a negative PCR test result if, during the trip, they are accompanied by their fully vaccinated parents or guardians.

A Myanmar visa is required for all travelers, and minors are no exception. They must have separate Myanmar visa applications completed by their parents or legal guardians.

Transit information

A visa for Myanmar is mandatory for visits of any length. So even if you do not intend to stay in Myanmar for a long time and a short stay for transit is all you need, a Myanmar visa is still required.

Eligible citizens can quickly apply for a Myanmar visa for transit online without the necessity to attend an embassy in person.
