Kazakhstan visa policy

Kazakhstan visa policy specifies the requirements for foreign citizens to travel to and stay in Kazakhstan. Travelers coming to Kazakhstan must get a visa from one of the Kazakh diplomatic missions unless they hold a passport from one of the visa-exempt countries.

At the moment, foreigners can apply for a Kazakh electronic tourist visa or a regular visa. A visitor must check which application method they should use, as it depends on nationality and the purpose of the trip.

Citizens of more than 100 countries around the world can enjoy a great facilitation – a Kazakh eVisa. The application process can be completed within minutes without leaving your house. The electronic visa to Kazakhstan allows travel for tourism purposes for up to 90 days and for transit for 5 days.

A regular visa to Kazakhstan has a more complicated application process, but it is an option for citizens who cannot apply for a Kazakh eVisa or those intending long-term trips. In order to obtain it, an applicant must make a personal visit at the nearest embassy or consulate.

Moreover, nationals of 61 countries can travel to Kazakhstan visa-free. They can stay from 2 weeks up to 3 months in the country without a visa. However, for employment, a work permit is obligatory.

Even though it is crucial to examine the Kazakhstan visa policy, it is not all you need to know: all international travelers must be aware of and adhere to other entry requirements of Kazakhstan.

Who can enter Kazakhstan?

Currently, the Kazakhstan visa policy imposes no entry bans against nationals of certain territories from entering the country.

Citizens of all countries can enter Kazakhstan if they satisfy its entry requirements. Every visitor must carry a valid passport and a valid Kazakh visa.

Depending on your nationality, it may be necessary for a person to get a Kazakh visa online or apply for a regular visa.

Entry requirements for Kazakhstan

All visitors must hold an international passport with a minimum validity period of 3 months.

Certain nationalities can stay in Kazakhstan without a visa for up to 90/30/14 days. Travelers who do need a Kazakh visa must ensure they use the proper method of applying for a Kazakhstan visa.

As of 8 June 2022, Kazakhstan has lifted the requirements regarding Covid-19, so now travelers arriving in Kazakhstan do not need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and PCR certificate.

If you test positive during your stay in Kazakhstan, you will be obliged to self-isolate for 10 days. People in need of medical assistance may be confined to state facilities.

Yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for tourists arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission and those having transited through an airport of such a country.

Those who will be going to Kazakhstan with their vehicle must purchase motor insurance. Travel insurance is recommended, however, not compulsory.

Documents checklist for entering Kazakhstan

To comply with the Kazakhstan entry rules, you must have the following documents upon arrival:

  • a passport that does not expire within at least 3 months beyond the arrival date
  • a valid Kazakh visa
  • motor insurance (obligatory)
  • yellow fever vaccination (if applicable)
  • travel insurance (recommended)

Methods of getting a Kazakh visa

Foreign nationals intending to come to Kazakhstan can apply either for a Kazakh eVisa or a regular visa. Currently, a visa on arrival is not available.

Electronic visa

There are three Kazakhstan electronic visa types: a single visa for 90 days of stay in the country, a multiple-entry visa for numerous 90-day visits, and a transit visa for 5 days for those who only need to pass through the country to their next travel destination.

The application process is simple: a person completes a form on the website, covers the fees, and checks the email address. The approved online visa to Kazakhstan is delivered to the applicant’s email address.

Regular visa

A regular visa, also known as a traditional or a consular visa, requires more hassle: it is necessary to make a personal visit to a foreign mission.

An applicant must collect all the documentation needed for the Kazakh regular visa application and schedule an appointment at the nearest Kazakhstan embassy. There will be a visa interview: a consular officer will ask an applicant some questions about the upcoming trip.
