Japan eVisa is an electronic visa currently available only for nationals of a few countries entering Japan by air. The country planned to introduce the eVisa system in April 2020 but due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the date has been delayed. The list of Japan eVisa eligible nations is also expected to be extended soon.
Eligible travelers can use the approved electronic visa to visit Japan for the purpose of tourism or business and stay there for up to 90 days. Since the Japan online visa is issued as a single-entry visa, its holder can enter the country only once.
An applicant needs to complete a short online application form by providing personal and passport details, and travel-related information, as well as answering a few security questions.
Please note that Japan eVisa does not cover long-term stays in Japan or purposes such as work or study. For any other purpose than tourism or business, please contact the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate to get a visa covering your particular traveling needs.
There are around 65 visa-exempt nations whose citizens can enter Japan for tourism or business visa-free, provided that the duration of their planned stay is between 15 and 180 days.
There are also around 180 countries that cannot enjoy visa-exempt entry to Japan and do need to obtain an appropriate visa prior to travel. Currently, the Japan eVisa system is available only to a few countries (check the list below) whose citizens plan to visit Japan for short-term leisure or business-related purposes.
Note: The list of Japan eVisa-eligible countries is expected to be rolled out to other nationalities in the near future.

Travelers need to travel to Japan as part of an organized tour group. Before starting the Japan visa application, a tourist must first obtain a certificate for completion of registration to ERFS, which is supplied by the tour operator in Japan or any other receiving organization.
This certificate is also mandatory for all business travelers who need to receive it from the Japanese host company. The ERFS registration should be uploaded when completing the online visa application process.
The ERFS form is not mandatory for applicants who will be visiting relatives in Japan. Instead, they need to upload both an Invitation Letter and a document proving their kinship, e.g., marriage or birth certificate.
Also, every applicant needs to be a holder of a valid passport from an eVisa-eligible country. It will also be necessary to upload a digital passport-style photo.
A person applying for a Japan online visa for a minor must additionally attach a parental consent form.
