The electronic visa system was introduced by the Australian Government in 2008. Its implementation was aimed at speeding up the process of getting a visa.

Depending on the individual’s nationality, there are two different types of electronic visas to Australia – ETA and eVisitor. Both visas, however, serve tourism, business, and transit purposes and function as multiple-entry permits.

A holder of a valid Australian visa can visit Australia numerous times within a 1-year validity period and stay maximally 3 months every time.

To submit an Australian visa application, eligible applicants need to have a valid passport, an Internet-connected electronic device, valid means of online payment, and an active email address.

An applicant simply needs to fill out a short online form and cover the processing fee. After the successful processing of the visa application, the approved eVisa is delivered to an individual via email. As it is digitally linked to the passport, it’s not necessary to print it out.

Every application requires providing basic personal and travel information and covering the processing fee of 49 Euro.

A traveler arriving in Australia will need to show a valid passport during the airport control so that border officials can verify their visas.

Who needs an ETA Australia

All travelers who will be visiting Australia by air need to hold a valid ETA or eVisitor visa. Both visa types are issued for tourism or business purposes, including family and friends reunions or going on a cruise. Moreover, one may use them to transit through Australia.

Cruise information

A visa is required to enter Australia during a cruise. In the case of a round-trip cruise, the time spent on the cruise is counted as time spent in Australia, i.e., you’re not considered a person who has left Australia. Moreover, a round-trip cruise won’t reset your stay period on the visa you’re holding.

To dispel any doubts in this matter, please remember to ask your cruise operator/travel provider if your cruise is a round trip.

ETA Australia validity

Both Australian visa types – ETA and eVisitor – are issued for 365 days (1 year). The validity period starts on the date of issue. Both travel authorizations enable numerous entries to Australia, while every single stay can be as long as 3 months.
All the above-mentioned rules apply to both tourism and business purposes.

Transit information

Every traveler transiting through Australia, regardless of the duration of their transit stop, will need to obtain a visa.

ETA Australia types

ETA (subclass 601)

Electronic Travel Authority is issued as a multiple-entry visa serving tourism and business purposes. ETA remains valid for 12 months from the date of issue, while its holder is allowed numerous 3-month entries to Australia. There are only 8 countries in the world eligible for Australian ETA.

eVisitor (subclass 651)

The eVisitor visa is also a multiple-entry travel authorization issued for citizens of all European countries. eVisitor, similarly to ETA, is issued for 1 year, and every single entry to Australia can last up to 90 days.
As a holder of an ETA or eVisitor visa, you may travel to Australia for:

• tourism: all kinds of leisure-related activities such as family and friend reunions, vacationing, exploring tourist attractions, or simply relaxing;
• business: handling business affairs, e.g., negotiating contracts, looking for potential business partners, and attending business events and conferences.
